Memory Threads

Memory Threads and the Moment series are Benz’s response to her Mother’s old family films. Known faces are erased, and pigments hover in atmospheric veils to evoke a longing for the familiar, yet are loaded with potential and possibility.

In some of these paintings, threads of paint have been removed to show the multiple under layers of colour. Some removed threads interrupt the picture, others produce a static against the stilled accompanied work. In each, the thread of memory is reinforced as a fabrication, woven through and informed by experience and perspective.
