Metallic

Originating in photographs of Benz wrestling with her son, Benz’s paintings explored the stilted claustrophobic aspects of domestic intimacy that are often overlooked or denied. Her circular compositions of entwined figures evoke gestation and birth. In an exhibition context such as Metallic, Benz visceral approach leaving under-painting exposed and rubbing at the paint-engaged with a breadth of media. Her handling of the pigment suggested the fugitive quality of film, the forensic intentions of recent imaging techniques and the primevil feel of Jacob Ogdens Smith’s nearby work in clay.
